Frames of Reverence — The Open Air Painting of Kim Do at Art on 16 Contemporary Gallery

Art on 16 is proud to announce that for August we will be exhibiting landscape paintings by New York artist Kim Do. The work will be on exhibit from Saturday, August 4 through August 29, with an opening reception on August 4 from 7:00 to 9:00pm.

Every once in a while an artist comes along whose work has a freshness and immediacy that astounds you and invites you to share in his joy in our natural surroundings. Trees, hills, sky, and water exist in natural light and open air, caught quickly and authentically just as they are, and we find our senses refreshed.

Kim Do is such an artist. Born in New York City in 1954, he loves the challenge of painting landscapes en plein air (i.e. outdoors) on the spot. He often photographs the canvases so they fit into the landscapes that surround them, referencing the surrealist painter René Magritte, a distant relative of Mr. Do on the Belgian side of his heritage. This show will mark the first time these photos are displayed alongside the paintings. He will also be creating paintings of local Southwest Virginia sites, to be included in the exhibit.

Kim Van Do’s work has been collected by notable corporations and individuals, including: Citibank, N.A., Brown Forman, American Express, Minneapolis, Cargill International, Triangle Industries, Johnson & Johnson, and Reader’s Digest, to name a few. He is also represented by Windham Fine Arts Gallery in the Catskill Mountains, Windham, NY., a location near many of Mr. Do’s painting sites.

Mr. Do is of Vietnamese and Dutch/Belgian descent, and currently resides in New York City, with his wife, Iris Cahn. Their grown children remain a source of love and joy. Mr. Do has taught art and run the visual arts department at the Horace Mann School for many years.
