Renowned storyteller, Anndrena Belcher, comes to The Lincoln Theatre in Marion, VA on Friday, February 26, 2010.  Her own words and images spoken and sung in a “dance in the wilderness” of memory and moment.

2010 Wayne Henderson Festival and
T-Shirt Design Contest

The 16th Annual Wayne Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2010 (rain or shine) at Grayson Highlands State Park in Mouth of Wilson, VA.  This year’s event also includes a T-Shirt Design Contest — deadline for entries is March 9, 2010. The winner will receive $100 and 2 free tickets to the festival.

Collins House Inn Signature Belgian Waffles

We always hoped to have a signature breakfast entree here at The Collins House Inn in Marion, VA, and our guests have overwhelmingly chosen one for us. It’s our Belgian waffles with fresh strawberries and whipped cream (or freshly made blueberry compote depending on the season).

I have sent this recipe home with many guests, so I thought our blog would be a great place to post it so that others could try it out. The waffles are super easy to make, have a wonderful light, crispy texture, with just the right amount of flavoring. The original recipe was taken from Rachel Ray’s $40 A Day cookbook, but I have made several “embellishments” to add more flavor. I’ve only ever made this in a deep-pocketed waffle maker, so I’d highly recommend having one. But, hey, you can always try it in a regular waffle iron. Also, the recipe can easily be doubled. Burke’s Garden is Virginia’s highest valley and has long been an agricultural paradise atop a mountain.

On your trip to Burke’s Garden, you must visit its General Store. Here you’ll find local artisan crafts, wonderful specialty spices, jams, and jellies, and you can also grab a quick lunch from the General Store’s cafe.

December 2009 Snowstorm at The Collins House Inn in Marion, VA

Winter (here in Marion, VA) rarely passes without one or two truly beautiful snowfalls. The one shown in the photo here came a couple of weeks ago and blanketed us with about 10 inches. This photo was taken later in the evening — hence, the reason some of the snowflakes look more like little meteors.

I think a snowstorm is one of life’s simple pleasures — not only because of its visual beauty, but because of the unmatched calm and quiet that comes over everything.

Here at The Collins House Inn, we always embrace Winter and find it the perfect time of year for our guests to cozy up by the fire with a nice glass of wine or mug of hot chocolate and just enjoy the peace and quiet.
